First Day at Robert F Kennedy Elementary School

Today was my first day to attend Robert F Kennedy Elementary School. When I arrived there I notice that the school was very poor looking, but had a certain comfort to it. There were a lot of pictures and paintings on the walls of the children's work which was very comforting. Walking threw the school everyone was very friendly in saying hello, even the children. however I did notice as I was walking threw the building that were was a lot of teachers yelling, mostly every teacher was yelling at their children which Idid not like that. Maybe this is how they feel they have to get threw to the children but I don't feel that way. I do feel that discipline is a huge factor in this school, they are very hard on the children, but most of the children need that push. Getting into the classroom the teacher was very nice, she seemed very overwhelmed but I would be to. The children were very polite some more than others. For most of the time that I was there, I took 5 children aside and did a reading lesson with them. They each took a turn reading the pages in the book and then we did a reading response on it. We then went back into the class room where I helped a bunch of children make note cards for their vocabulary words. As i researched my school a little more on infoworks.com, I saw that in the school year 2008-2009 the 4th graders were more porficient than they have been. This means that the school is getting better in there learning and the children are learning more.Today was a very productive day with the children, and I am looking forward to going next Friday.

  1. Brittany, thanks for sharing your first impressions on your school! Please tell us about the demographics of your school (class, language, ethnicity, race) Go back to info-works and find out if what you saw matches what is on the site for your school? Also remember the assignment for today about An Indian Father's Plea!

  2. It's great to read about the "progress" students in your school have been making! What did you find out about the "demographics" of your students, the school faculty and staff? (class, ethnicity,language...)

  3. Well in my classroom, most of the children are of a different culture. Some African American, some Hyspanic, and one or two students that are white. This classroom has a lot of diversity but it seems to work in a way where everyone gets along, and there are no problems. All of the children in the classroom speak English, some do however speak Spanish but they know English and use that in the classroom. As for the teachers, my outlook on them is that they are very strict with the children, which to a point it is nesccesary. However, sometimes it is not. The faculty, like to yell a lot, from when I walk into the building to when I leave all i hear is yelling comeing from each classroom. This is not how I pictured an Emenentary School to be, but im getting used to it.
